Everyone
expects to come into contact with water when indulging the exciting
sport of sailing, whether that be launching and recovery of the
boats, or actually sailing, especially on the idyllic Rutland Water
with the members of Rutland Sailability. However, another
significant activity in which Rutland Sailability members and their
supporters indulge in is fundraising, which does not usually involve
getting wet. Not so for the Grantham Rotarians! Members of this
Rotary Club have been organising a Swimarathon each year for the
past 22 years, the proceeds of which go towards supporting local
charities and organisations. During this time over £500,000 has
been raised. An absolutely tremendous effort by any standards. Ten
years ago Rutland Sailability was given an Access Dinghy from the
proceeds of the event, and this year we have purchased a Challenger
Trimaran, funded partly from last year’s event and partly from this
year’s donations, which also enabled Rutland Sailability to buy a
new launching trolley for another boat. This new boat replaces an
Access Dinghy which has given 10 years of hardworking and faithful
service to members of Rutland Sailability. Some of those members
took the new boat to the Grantham event this year to show those
taking part the sort of project which benefits from their generosity
and hard work.
Tricia McNair, Chairman of
Rutland Sailability said, “A very big thank you to everyone at the
Rotary Club of Grantham for their support, and well done for such a
marvellous achievement in fundraising over the years. Many thanks
also to those Rutland Sailability members who supported the event by
taking our new boat along to enable people to see what has been
achieved by their fundraising efforts, and to talk to everyone about
what we do at Rutland Sailability.”
Rotarian Roger Graves, who organised the event
said, “A big, big thank you to all those who took part, to our
Corporate Sponsors and to the hundreds of supporters who turned up
over the three days – it was an absolutely fantastic event.”
