Training

The ethos of Rutland Sailability is to develop each individual’s potential so that, wherever possible, everyone will achieve independence on the water and be able to sail single-handed.

If you want to sail:

We will complete an individual assessment for you

Develop a training programme personalised for you

Train you using RYA qualified instructors

Racing:

Once you can sail, if you want to compete in organised races we can arrange further training in racing. Have a look at our 'Racing Pages'.

Helping Out:

If you would like to help out with Rutland Sailability we can provide training in disability awareness, First Aid and the use of our safety boats

Instructing:

If you want to teach others how to sail, we can provide RYA accredited training

Policy on Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)

All members and visitors sailing, on the jetties or at the water’s edge must wear a PFD appropriate to their activity.

Selection of PFDs:

Buoyancy Aid.  If you are a confident swimmer who could cope even when fully clothed then the minimum PFD that you should use is a buoyancy aid.

Lifejacket with Permanent Buoyancy.  If you are not a confident swimmer when fully clothed then the minimum PFD you should use is a lifejacket with permanent buoyancy.

All buoyancy aids/lifejackets must fit correctly.  All zips, buckles and fasteners (including crotch straps where fitted) must be done up fully before approaching the water’s edge or jetties.  The Controller of Sailing, Jetty Master and instructors must ensure that all members and visitors comply with this policy.

Members and visitors sailing dinghies, Keelboats or Multihulls must wear buoyancy aids or lifejackets with permanent buoyancy.

Members and visitors in safety boats or RSC Powerboats must wear buoyancy aids or lifejackets with permanent buoyancy.

If any member wishes to obtain an exemption from the policy above, they should write to the Trustees stating their case as to why they should be granted an exemption.  Their case will then be considered at the next Trustees meeting.
