Presentation to RS By Rutland County Golf Club

This photo was taken at the Rutland County Golf Club, when the retiring Captain, John Mason, presented Ros Mulholland-Gullick with a cheque on behalf of the Golf Club Members.  John, who is a member of Friends of Rutland Sailability, had generously nominated RS to be the beneficiary of all the Captain's fundraising during his year of office.

The main event during the year was a Golf Tournament held at the RCGC on 19 July, when Ros and other members of Rutland Sailability were stationed at the 9th Hole;  it was here that refreshments were being served to golfers & supporters alike.

Other events have added to their fundraising throughout the year and the grand total came to more than £3K - what an amazing achievement!  Sincere thanks to everyone involved with raising funds for RS and congratulations to John on such a successful year.

I am sure everyone at RS will be equally full of admiration for John and his fellow members of Rutland County Golf Club, and will wish to join with me in thanking them for their tremendous generosity

RUTLAND ROADSHOW 2011

Rutland Sailability, in association with Tennants Auctioneers, once again hosted a very successful and enjoyable Valuation Day at The Rutland Sailing Club. Many visitors brought along a wide range of antiques and family treasures and were able to consult with three of Tennants’ expert valuers.

Overlooking the beautiful scenery of Rutland Water on a sunny November day, visitors also sought the free advice of furniture restorer, Ludovic Potts, admired the skills of cane worker Brian Garrard, as well as trying their luck on the Tombola and testing their knowledge in an antiques quiz. All proceeds of the event support the work of Rutland Sailability.

Further pictures are available in the Roadshow Photo Gallery

Witham Hall Preparatory School Raises Money for Rutland Sailabilty

Pupils and parents at Witham Hall Preparatory School hoarded masses of textiles for recycling over the summer holidays for a collection to support local charity Rutland Sailability. Maureen Walker from Rutland Sailabilty had been invited in by pupils of Banks House to talk to the school and launch the scheme before the summer holiday.  Her presentation explained how Rutland Sailability provides sailing opportunities for people of all ages with a wide range of disabilities. This really struck a chord with the pupils who were very keen to get on board with the recycling scheme.

The Captains of Banks house, Alexander Davies and Lilla Powell, on behalf of the school, presented Maureen Walker with a cheque for £317 pounds in a school assembly on Tuesday 11th October.  Mrs Walker, in return, kindly acknowledged the donation leaving the school with a Rutland Sailability framed photograph depicting empty wheelchairs left on the jetty beside Rutland Water whilst their owners enjoyed the freedom of sailing at Rutland Sailability.  Pupils are keen to have another collection later in the year and intend to send some pupils to see at first hand the work of Rutland Sailability.

Rutland Sailability-Supporters' Day Thursday 8th September 2011

After several days of mixed weather it was a pleasure to welcome our supporters to Rutland Sailability on a calmer and latterly sunny day. The occasion proved a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all visitors – those who sailed and those who toured our excellent facilities. Our Chairman, Martin Sutcliffe, after extending a formal warm welcome, presented framed “Gone Sailing” photographs to Sue Cook representing Cummins Generator Technologies Charity Committee for their past and present financial support and Jane Smetten representing Greetham Music and Ale Festival and Greetham Community Centre on the receipt of their most generous cheque for £1200. Mike Baumber thanked Friends of Rutland Sailability for their consistent support and spoke of the very positive effect this has on Sailability. The spontaneous “Thoughts from a Member” came from Watson Fenwick and were warmly received by all.  Further photos of the event are included in the Photo Gallery.

Prestigious Award For Rutland Sailability Member

The Paul Harris Fellows programme was established in 1957 by the Rotarians with Fellowships being awarded to people for their humanitarian contributions which help to improve the lives of others in communities both at home and abroad.  Rotarians often wish to recognise the hard work of others by donating in their honour and presenting them with a Paul Harris award for services to communities. This Fellowship has in the past been given by Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland to a number of publicly recognised personalities, including:

• Terry Waite
• Diana Princess of Wales
• Bob Geldof
• Midge Ure
• Bono
• Simon Weston OBE

It is not necessary for a recipient to be a Rotarian, as Rotarians can also apply for friends and family to be made a Paul Harris Fellow by making donations in their honour; friends, family and colleagues make so many valuable contributions to the lives of others and a Paul Harris Fellowship is a perfect way for Rotarians to thank them for all their support.

This year Rotary Club of Stamford Burghley have for the second time selected one of our Rutland Sailability Members to receive this Award, the first having been Barry Parsisson who was honoured a few years ago.  This year the Award has been given to Mike Baumber, a long-standing member of Rutland Sailability, having in the past served as a Trustee, most recently as Deputy Chairman and leading member of the Marketing & Promotions Team, as such having firmly established Friends of Rutland Sailability as its Co-Ordinator, a role he still performs with enormous success.  In giving the background to Mike’s selection for this Award, Adrian Childs, another Rutland Sailability Member, cited the work Mike has done for RS, mentioning especially his work with ‘Friends of Rutland Sailability’.  The Award was presented to Mike by President Ian Parsons at the Stamford Burghley President’s Dinner in June.

Congratulations Mike in Receiving this Well-Deserved Honour

Bags Were Packed at Morrisons!

Fifty Members and Friends of Rutland Sailability gave up at least two hours of their time to help shoppers pack their bags at Morrisons Supermarket, Stamford over the Bank Holiday Weekend - 28 and 29 May.

The Access 2.3 sailboat, sponsored by The Rotary Club of Stamford, was on display in the entrance hall and helpers were stationed at the till checkouts where they offered to help shoppers pack their bags.  Full training was given to avoid the potatoes being packed on top of the cream cakes, and some helpers even forgot to go home at the end of their shift - they were enjoying themselves so much! Some shoppers preferred to pack their own bags, and still put donations into the buckets!

A number of enquiries about Rutland Sailability were received by members stationed with the sailboat and the stylish 'Rutland Sailability' tabards were very popular!  A total of just over £2,000 was raised - helping to sustain Rutland  Sailability as  a great place for people with disabilities to come to enjoy sailing.

Our special thanks go to Nigel Walters, General Manager, and all the staff at Morrisons, Stamford, for permitting us to hold our collection in the store.    Also to Paul Fieldhouse, a Friend of Rutland Sailability, whose business connections with Morrisons helped us to stage the collection in the store.

Stamford Lions Inspect The Fleet!

On April 21st Martin Sutcliffe, Chairman of Rutland Sailability welcomed Stamford & District Lions’ President, Gill Clarke, to Rutland Sailability, along with a significant group of Lions from various Districts in the East Midlands.  This visit was prompted by Stamford & District Lions who expressed a wish to support Rutland Sailability in their aims to provide sailing opportunities for people with disabilities.  Gill thanked Martin for his kind words of welcome and then handed over a cheque for £300, and Martin presented Gill with a ‘Gone Sailing’ framed photograph, denoting the fact that this activity had been made possible for RS members through the generous support of Stamford & District Lions.

Martin expressed his gratitude for the donation, which was completely unexpected, saying, “I cannot sufficiently express the depth of our gratitude for this generous donation, which comes at a time when the charity sector is struggling to maintain sustainable funding.  We at Rutland Sailability understand just how difficult it is in the present economic climate to secure any funding, and we doubly appreciate such a significant sum from a relatively small group of Lions’ members.  Thank you each and every one of you for this contribution.”

After the official welcome, the visitors were shown a DVD depicting a typical sailing day on Rutland Water, then taken on a tour of the facilities by RS Members, with the offer of a sailing experience should any of the visitors wish to take to the water.  All the visitors were impressed by what they saw, which included the newly constructed jetties, which members were using for the first time.  Prior to leaving, Gill and her group of visitors were told that they were most welcome to make a return visit in the near future.
